OTS x OP1 x WCDB Interview: Jillionaire

The next round of monthly parties on the sly and OUTPOST1 (with support from WCDB) are nearing closer – current countdown reads at 10 and 11 days respectively – and the following interview was just too good to keep starred in my priority inbox any longer. This month’s headliner, Jillionaire, is hilarious (and of course, talented) and I can’t wait for us to host him in Albany on May 18th at Jillian’s, alongside Mix Pak’s Dre Skull and residents Party With Tina, Knomad and Looney.

Additionally, be sure to hit us with an e-mail at RSVP@KeepAlbanyBoring.com so we can add your name to the list for the RSVP-only Happy Hour to get the early advantage on our inexpensive-but-not-cheap drink specials. Happy Hour runs an hour prior to when we open the doors to the public too, so come hang out early.

Jillionaire has over fifteen years of experience and has created a unique sound which mashes indie dance and big room house with the caribbean rhythms of soca and dancehall. He has built up quite the resume that stretches an arms length including joining Major Lazer across the globe on a sold-out tour, curating the first Mad Decent showcase at Camp Bisco X, releasing his fair share of remixes and original tracks and plotting World Domination alongside the likes of Diplo.

To help you get acquainted with the man himself, we took some time to conduct this interview, which is a nice balance of funny and factual. Check it out beneath the cut!

KC’s Music Monday: Last Day of April Edition

Not sure if the last day of April has any significance to it (or if there’s some kind of made-up Internet holiday for it) but either way, it’s a Music Monday occasion. Enjoy.

First up is a new mix from OUTPOST1 and on the sly resident knomad for Sampled Radio split alongside Brian A. It’s available as a free download so you can bump it at your leisure to get pumped on May’s monthlies where you can catch knomad doing his thing live. Alongside WCDB, we’re co-hosting Jillionaire and Dre Skull alongside our residents and now that it’s almost May, the countdown has begun. Full track-listing for both Brian A and knomad available here.

Check out what else I’m listening to today beneath the cut. Also – I have a handful of local music to rinse through the next couple weeks and if you’d like your music to be added to my ever-growing queue feel free to e-mail me.

OUTPOST1: Interview with Obey City

Brooklyn-based producer Obey City will be joining Tall Ass Matt and residents Party With Tina, Knomad and Looney this Friday for the April edition of OUTPOST1.

Quick tip: be sure to join in on our RSVP-only happy hour drink specials from 10 to 11pm Friday; just send a quick e-mail with your name to RSVP@keepalbanyboring.com to get in on the fun.

This month’s guest, Obey (pronunciation oh-bee) is definitely not a one-trick pony behind the decks and also keeps busy creating tunes, collaborating with others and maintaining Astro Nautico – the digitally-based label he founded alongside Kuhn and Paul Jones.

For his personal contributions to the world of forward-thinking bass music, he creates tracks that are soulful, emotional and mix the likes of R&B, funky, house and grime into his signature blend of club smashing tunes.

You can check out his music on SoundCloud and also scope his debut Melted Magic EP via Astro Nautico. Additionally, for those of you who missed it, Obey City was featured last night on Noise212, and his set will be added to the impressive archive including the likes of Krueger, Mess Kid, Samo Sound Boy, Sliink, Jim-E Stack and more.

Really looking forward to this month’s party and to help you become familiarized – knomad and myself teamed up to conduct the following interview.

Hit the jump and we’ll see you Friday.

KC’s Music Monday: Obey City, Archie Pelago, Artek, Jackmaster + Ben UFO

First up is the Essential Mix from Rustie which features two tracks from April’s OUTPOST1 guest, Obey City. You can check out the mix here, for the next 4 days, then probably troll around to find it posted somewhere else. It’s an even 2 hours too, which is perfect to start off your work week.

Over the weekend, my personal Twitter feed blew up with support of our friends in Archie Pelago, who recorded a live set for the one and only Mary Anne Hobbes for XFM. It was a fun experience catching it live but in case you missed it, you can stream it here. It starts around 22 minutes in and will be posted up on mixcloud sometime in the near future. You can also check out this interview I did awhile ago in the KAB archive. Keep an eye on Archie’s upcoming gig dates; you never know when it’ll align that they trek up I-87 from Brooklyn to visit us in Albany. Their live performances are not to be missed, and they also hinted on Facebook they’ll post a video from the MAH performance sometime soon.

This next mix from Ben UFO and Jackmaster went live last week and I am responsible for at least a dozen plays at this point. It’s a really excellent office soundtrack, with its proper dedication and tribute to the art of the “warm-up set” with an emphasis on building, much like what should happen in the early stage of a night. (Bonus: check out this feature on Resident Advisor on the importance of the opening DJ’s set. Tall Ass Matt will be opening the next OUTPOST1 and has the art of opening down, which is why we asked him back for a second round.)

Lastly, out tomorrow on multiple digital distribution sites is the next release from one of my favorite labels, B YRSELF, from self-described “low key” UK producer Artek. I’ve been bumping the preview for awhile now and it makes for very good listening, with smooth and original production. It’s a bit calm at times (which I like) and has several layers to it. Listen through a couple times and you’ll see (hear) what I mean. The EP also features remixes from Umba, Keiska and BombĂ©.

OUTPOST1 Exclusive Mix + Interview: Brother Suarez

A week from today marks the next OUTPOST1! This month we’re packing a quality local bill featuring Brother Suarez, Jay Travis b2b Brad Lee, Tall Ass Matt, and as usual residents Party With Tina, Knomad and Looney.

Some updates you should know for this time around: we’ve moved to Jillian’s (which has a much, much better sound system, VIP sections with bottle service and a larger bar and dance floor), we are now 21+ and we will also feature a special RSVP only Happy Hour. For more details on how to take advantage of the Happy Hour special, check out the Facebook event.

For those of you paying uncomfortably close attention, Brother Suarez played OUTPOST1 in March exactly one year ago. He also kicked off our mix tape series, which you can still find archived on KAB. In the time that’s passed, he’s managed to balance playing out at a variety of venues throughout town with being a founder + resident at JunGALA: New Paltz’s biggest night for bass music, holding down a weekly radio show at WCDB, all while finishing things up at UAlbany.

Brother Suarez has consistently showcased immaculate skill as a DJ and considering he bought his first pair of 1200s at 15, he’s one of the genuine few who can say he honestly grew up alongside learning the art of DJing. He’s as much a tastemaker as he is versed with the talent of bringing high energy to every set.

He took the time to not only answer a few questions but also treated us to a short-n-sweet mix to kick off the weekend. Check it out and be sure to cop the DL.

Check out the Q+A beneath the jump!
