OUTPOST1 Exclusive Mix + Interview: Brother Suarez

A week from today marks the next OUTPOST1! This month we’re packing a quality local bill featuring Brother Suarez, Jay Travis b2b Brad Lee, Tall Ass Matt, and as usual residents Party With Tina, Knomad and Looney.

Some updates you should know for this time around: we’ve moved to Jillian’s (which has a much, much better sound system, VIP sections with bottle service and a larger bar and dance floor), we are now 21+ and we will also feature a special RSVP only Happy Hour. For those of you paying uncomfortably close attention, Brother Suarez played OUTPOST1 in March exactly one year ago. He also kicked off our mix tape series, which you can still find archived on KAB. In the time that’s passed, he’s managed to balance playing out at a variety of venues throughout town with being a founder + resident at JunGALA: New Paltz’s biggest night for bass music, holding down a weekly radio show at WCDB, all while finishing things up at UAlbany.

Brother Suarez has consistently showcased immaculate skill as a DJ and considering he bought his first pair of 1200s at 15, he’s one of the genuine few who can say he honestly grew up alongside learning the art of DJing. He’s as much a tastemaker as he is versed with the talent of bringing high energy to every set.

He took the time to not only answer a few questions but also treated us to a short-n-sweet mix to kick off the weekend. Check it out and be sure to cop the DL.

OP1 x OTS: Interview with Doctor Jeep vol. 2

Doctor Jeep is the first out-of-towner to grace OUTPOST1 twice and for absolute good reason – July’s OP1 was top notch. Back in July, we featured a full blown Q+A and mix. Cue the mix nostalgia here and to re-familiarize everyone, I asked him a couple q’s to catch up with him. In a nutshell, since July, he’s been super busy working on his own productions, playing out with dudes like SBTRKT and being a full-time student at Northeastern. Jeep baby, how do you do it!

His latest tracks, “Monica” and “Whoomp!”, have been rinsed in during KAB radio on WCDB the past couple of weeks and depending on travel time Friday, he’ll be back on the airwaves prior to OP1.

OUTPOST1 Preview: A chat with Joe Nice

It has naturally developed as standard procedure for us OUTPOST1 party plannin’ folks to provide for you some background info on our headlining guests, usually in the form of an exclusive mix tape and a Q+A profile, as distributed for both pre-game and educational purposes. Perhaps, this time next year, you can look forward to holographic OUTPOST1 trading cards based off of the DJ profiles I curate — that’d be dope, right? — But for this month’s, it was more fitting (and fun) to have an informational and laid-back conversation instead of compiling “fun facts” and the like, so I phoned in with the man himself, Joe Nice.

Friday, both WCDB and the Fuze Box respectably, will play host to Joe Nice, alongside Dwell and residents Deep Children and Party With Tina. As Andrew intro’d in earlier in the week, Joe Nice is universally credited for being North America’s ambassador to dubstep. Joe Nice’s trading card would share with you the following information: he has been in the game since before there was even a label for the dubstep genre, he founded DubWar, which was the first dubstep party in America back in ’05, (and went 5 years strong), is a founding DJ on Baltimore’s GourmetBeats radio, was the first American DJ to play on RINSEFM, first American to play DMZ and the first American to play FWD. Joe Nice currently is behind the new series RECONSTRVCT down in Brooklyn, which carries the tagline “low frequency with decency”, alongside fellow DubWar resident Dave Q and Truenature, and also was the US debut for Deep Medi producer V.I.V.E.K, this past July.

I spoke with Joe Nice yesterday for almost an hour on the phone and our conversation began with us both joking that I had no idea what to ask him. Bassfaced did an interview with Joe that was absolutely on par and covered all grounds that I’d want to cover. Do yourself a favor and read it. Anyway, Joe wasn’t all talked out following that interview and I felt like our conversation flew by in a bass-driven heartbeat.

OUTPOST1 Preview: Joe Nice

It’s almost go time! This month’s OUTPOST1 is here on Friday! We’ve got an enormous guest coming from Baltimore to help tear the Fuze Box down. Joe Nice is universally credited for being North America’s ambassador to dubstep. Dude has been in the scene since before there was even a label for the genre. Keeping on with these nutty claims, he founded DubWar, the first dubstep party in America in ’05. He’s also the first American DJ to play on RINSEFM, first American to play DMZ and the first American to play FWD. Dang.

Even with the explosion of “American Dubstep” (which is usually just electro midrange chainsaw noises) Joe Nice is making moves to keep furthering the sound of real dubstep. With the tagline “low frequency with decency”, RECONSTRVCT is a new series in Bushwick for the real dubstep heads, catering to the open, airy and deep sound of true dubstep.
