KC’s Music Monday: Reconstrvct Small World Edition

Over the years, as my personal music tastes within the world of transnational bass-driven music have expanded and evolved, I’ve compiled a growing mental list of “must-see” DJs and producers. reconstrvct, a reoccurring event hosted in various venues and warehouses throughout Brooklyn, has been knocking people off my list with each bill. This upcoming Saturday is no exception.

On Saturday, August 25th, reconstrvct kicks its second year off with an international display of talent from Goth-Trad (by way of Japan), Daleduro (by way of Argentina), Killawatt and Thelem (by way of the UK) and home team residents Joe Nice, Truenature and Hahn Solo. MVC – Max Von Cannon (by way of Hong Kong/Boston) has been added to the line-up as well. With a good majority of the guests playing out for the first time on American soil, Saturday will be a Small World indeed.

New York State of Bass: 5 Q’s with Proper Villians

In advance of New York State of Bass taking place tomorrow night at the Armory, I had a quick chat with Proper Villians.

1. Introduce yourself! Who you are, what you do, where you’re from.

I’m Jon, I’m from NYC and I make/play eclectic bass music. Mainly dubstep, but also electro, moombahton, hip-hop, drum & bass or just about anything with a lot of bass or lazer noises in it.

2. How did you first get involved with DJing and remixing? Do you identify with being a DJ or a producer more? Do you separate them in your mind or for you, is it all apart of the same game?

I got my first pair of turntables back in 1998 shortly after attending my first rave. I started making beats on a PC maybe a year later, but didn’t get serious about my production until September 12th, 2001. DJing and producing are really intertwined for me. I don’t really consider a song “finished” until I play it out at a party & the remixing thing came about so I could work a wider range of songs into my DJ sets.

3. What have you been up to lately? What are some recent projects or things we can expect from you in the near future?

I just did a remix of Roger Seventytwo’s “Take Me Higher” which was released on Fools Gold/Ministry of Sound (you can also grab it for free on my SoundCloud). I also released a free bootleg of Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” on my Soundcloud this week. I’ve got a bunch of new bootlegs and a couple of originals in the works.

4. Favorite track or producer that is particularly killing it right now?

There’s too much good music coming out right now to play favorites. I’m really feeling all this new moombahton stuff. Producers like Billy the Gent, Jay Fay, as well as the heavier “moombahcore” stuff like Nick Thayer & Milo & Otis.

5. What can we look forward to on Saturday?

OUTPOST1 Preview: A chat with Joe Nice

It has naturally developed as standard procedure for us OUTPOST1 party plannin’ folks to provide for you some background info on our headlining guests, usually in the form of an exclusive mix tape and a Q+A profile, as distributed for both pre-game and educational purposes. Perhaps, this time next year, you can look forward to holographic OUTPOST1 trading cards based off of the DJ profiles I curate — that’d be dope, right? — But for this month’s, it was more fitting (and fun) to have an informational and laid-back conversation instead of compiling “fun facts” and the like, so I phoned in with the man himself, Joe Nice.

Friday, both WCDB and the Fuze Box respectably, will play host to Joe Nice, alongside Dwell and residents Deep Children and Party With Tina. As Andrew intro’d in earlier in the week, Joe Nice is universally credited for being North America’s ambassador to dubstep. Joe Nice’s trading card would share with you the following information: he has been in the game since before there was even a label for the dubstep genre, he founded DubWar, which was the first dubstep party in America back in ’05, (and went 5 years strong), is a founding DJ on Baltimore’s GourmetBeats radio, was the first American DJ to play on RINSEFM, first American to play DMZ and the first American to play FWD. Joe Nice currently is behind the new series RECONSTRVCT down in Brooklyn, which carries the tagline “low frequency with decency”, alongside fellow DubWar resident Dave Q and Truenature, and also was the US debut for Deep Medi producer V.I.V.E.K, this past July.

I spoke with Joe Nice yesterday for almost an hour on the phone and our conversation began with us both joking that I had no idea what to ask him. Bassfaced did an interview with Joe that was absolutely on par and covered all grounds that I’d want to cover. Do yourself a favor and read it. Anyway, Joe wasn’t all talked out following that interview and I felt like our conversation flew by in a bass-driven heartbeat.

Duncan’s Music Monday: Keep Albany Weighty

While just relaxing with the internet, it become infinitely easier to find cool shit. WIth that said I’m going to highlight a few dubstep tracks that are in my opinion good. These tracks may not be real new in terms of their release, but are new to my ears. *Read this with a cockney accent.

Far East Movement – Like a G6 (Dexcell Dubstep Remix) by Dexcell UK

Recently female leads in dubstep songs have become the object of my affection. Almost no matter what track it is, if there is a female lead I will like it substantially more. This remix by Dexcell does a good job at not over emphasizing the wobble. There are so many hyper electro dubstep songs coming out with female leads that when something like this skips along it should be highlighted. THe song treats the chorus differently allowing the dance floor to switch their footstyle and prep for the drop. Overall its just a solid track. Slow and Low right till the end.

The Glitch Mob-Drive It Like You Stole It-(GladKill Remix) by Gladkill

Glitchy dubstep when well executed is always very well received by my ears. This track has a nice low booming bass line and a fairly clean easy to follow progression of tone. Just a nice relaxed jingle.

Chase & Status – Blind Faith (ft. Liam Bailey) by ALXRSE

This track just speaks for itself. Its just massive and the builds in it are real top notch. Just big and full figured. MASSIVE CHUNE.

Lunice – Fancy Forty (Rustie Remix) by frankyboy

Rustie is what I would consider a power producer. He uses leading synth parts to really drive the track along. What I like the most is the simplicity that his songs have in their construction. It reminds me of 00-04 popular rap tracks but in a more refined way. He hits it out of the park with this catchy remix.
