OUTPOST1 Exclusive Mix + Interview: Brother Suarez

A week from today marks the next OUTPOST1! This month we’re packing a quality local bill featuring Brother Suarez, Jay Travis b2b Brad Lee, Tall Ass Matt, and as usual residents Party With Tina, Knomad and Looney.

Some updates you should know for this time around: we’ve moved to Jillian’s (which has a much, much better sound system, VIP sections with bottle service and a larger bar and dance floor), we are now 21+ and we will also feature a special RSVP only Happy Hour. For more details on how to take advantage of the Happy Hour special, check out the Facebook event.

For those of you paying uncomfortably close attention, Brother Suarez played OUTPOST1 in March exactly one year ago. He also kicked off our mix tape series, which you can still find archived on KAB. In the time that’s passed, he’s managed to balance playing out at a variety of venues throughout town with being a founder + resident at JunGALA: New Paltz’s biggest night for bass music, holding down a weekly radio show at WCDB, all while finishing things up at UAlbany.

Brother Suarez has consistently showcased immaculate skill as a DJ and considering he bought his first pair of 1200s at 15, he’s one of the genuine few who can say he honestly grew up alongside learning the art of DJing. He’s as much a tastemaker as he is versed with the talent of bringing high energy to every set.

He took the time to not only answer a few questions but also treated us to a short-n-sweet mix to kick off the weekend. Check it out and be sure to cop the DL.

KC’s Music Monday: Weekend Recap Edition

This past weekend an ambitious quest presented itself to me in what became a self-curated, Red Bull-fueled tour of three cities to attend three respective events in three days. Thursday brought me to Burlington for friends and Blockhead, Friday brought me back to Williamsburg for TURRBOTAX®, friends and educators Terrence Parker, Doc Daneeka and Octo Octa, and Saturday took me to New Paltz for JunGALA, friends and Dubbel Dutch and Samo Sound Boy. Needless to say, I spent majority of Sunday catching up on sleep and avoiding checking my bank account balance.

Before I get started in recapping my weekend, be sure to check out the latest mix from Party With Tina and dive into your work week properly.

For this week’s Music Monday, I present you with a random assortment of musical sources of inspiration as to why I brought myself on a bass-driven pilgrimage up North and up and down I-87.

Sorry not sorry for the longest post ever. Happy Monday, hit the jump.

KAB x JunGALA Interview: Samo Sound Boy

This Saturday, it comes recommended to make the pilgrimage from Albany to New Paltz (it really is just a straight shoot down 87 after all) to catch Dubbel Dutch and Samo Sound Boy play out in celebration of the two-year anniversary of JunGALA at Cabaloosa’s.

Simply put, this booking feels like planets aligned, especially considering that it is a two-year celebration (big ups New Paltz!) and also how last year when Samo was billed to play JunGALA, we were hit with a cancelation due to brutality in the form of Hurricane Irene. Thankfully the good folks involved with JunGALA and Broken Teeth Crew worked out bringing him back around and, no less, at a time when his label Body High is really beginning to turn heads.

Recently, Alexander Wang featured a track from the label’s own DJ Funeral during its runway show (!!!) and next week (Feb. 28) DJ Sliink’s Vibrate EP comes out on Body High! Sliink absolutely did the damn thing in the club last week and I’m stoked to catch Samo, (co-founder of the label alongside Jerome of the LOL Boys) just a week later. Also of note, this will be Dubbel Dutch’s second time gracing JunGALA so you can stop kicking yourself if you missed him play out locally last time (like I’ve been).

Samo Sound Boy, of Trouble & Bass, is a Los Angeles based producer and DJ whose powerful live sets and original productions have brought him to the forefront of today’s global club scene. With his second EP released through Palms Out Sounds, another for Trouble and Bass, and forthcoming remixes for the likes of Tim Dolla, Bassanova, and NGUZUNGUZU, Samo is only getting started spreading his club aesthetic that Chicago journalist Dave Quam described as: “Weird, banging, and beautiful. Like a shortwave radio recording of all the best stations at once.”

Andrew’s Music Monday: OUTPOST1 Recap

Oh yes. Friday, again went off without a hitch. We got in Brother Suarez from Heady Pro to roll through and smash up the crowd. Deep Children, of course, did their thing and brought the night home with a little b2b action thrown in for good measure too. Absolute smasher night, and I can’t thank everyone enough for making this continue to happen. Next month, we’ve got our first non-local coming through, and you may know of him. Hit the event link up top.

For my Music Monday, I’m going to give you two tracks I’m in love with at the moment.

The Heatwave refix of this song is big, but no where online yet. Jamie xx really knows his shit and it shines in every track I’ve heard from him.

This is such an obvious one, but it kills me every time I hear a DJ on Rinse play it. Apparently the business with this track is that no one knows who’s behind it. It’s hyped up through the god-damn roof, but deserves it.

And if you’re unfamilliar with Ghosts on Tape, shoot over to his sound cloud and get educated, you’ve got a month!

Bunch more OUTPOST 1 photos after the jump. Full set is on my flickr.

OUTPOSTMIX #1: Brother Suarez

I’m happy to be launching the Outpost Mix series today, and the debut is a good one. Every month, the week before an Outpost1 party, a new mix will be posted up for the people. The plan is to feature one of the DJ’s playing at the party that Friday. Our M.O. is to only host DJ’s we’re super-fans of at our party’s, so expect these mixtapes to be hot fire! Kicking off the series is our friend Brother Suarez.

Outpost1 by brothersuarez

I met Brother Suarez (Heady Pro) last year when we DJ’ed in that strange black theater room at SUNY together. The crowd was like all 18-year-old freshmen rave kids (apparently they still exist), and Suarez lent us needles to use after ours catastrophically both broke, damn… that was our first time meeting but I already knew well of his Jungala party’s in New Paltz, a huge inspiration to us for starting this Outpost1 monthly.

This mix is mainly a Funky ting. Suarez’ mixes usually go high-energy, which I love, but I think this one is a little more zoned-out, and I like that too. Martyn & Breach & Julio Bashmore = yes. And like every other Suarez mix I’ve listened to, expect flawlessly smooth mixing. Holler on the Suarez Soundcloud for a tracklist if you so desire.

So yeah, Suarez is DJing with us at Outpost1 this Friday @ Fuze Box! The kid kills it on the dancefloor, come show him love.
