While en route to Croatia, by way of three planes and one bus, I came across a line in the book I was reading at the time (the Best Music Writing of 2009 compilation), that read, “To write is to begin with nothing and hopefully get somewhere.”

Being fully aware that multi-day music festivals are as much of a subjective enigma as anything else in life, with as many different experiences as there are people in attendance, that line struck a cord and has been buried deep within me ever since. I had hoped from the beginning that traveling to Croatia would help me to gain a new perspective – how could it not, really? – but I didn’t realize such a simply-worded outlook could be so influential (and before I even got to my destination, no less).

This newfound insight was reaffirmed in the days following the festival as I began to digest what I had just experienced and thought about how to begin to put it into words for KAB. My goal here is simple: to start with the six scatter-brained notes and the 894 pictures I took on my iPhone, and hope to get somewhere.

Hit the jump for a massive photo gallery and to read more about my take of this year’s debut Dimensions Festival.

KC’s Music Monday: Reconstrvct Small World Edition

Over the years, as my personal music tastes within the world of transnational bass-driven music have expanded and evolved, I’ve compiled a growing mental list of “must-see” DJs and producers. reconstrvct, a reoccurring event hosted in various venues and warehouses throughout Brooklyn, has been knocking people off my list with each bill. This upcoming Saturday is no exception.

On Saturday, August 25th, reconstrvct kicks its second year off with an international display of talent from Goth-Trad (by way of Japan), Daleduro (by way of Argentina), Killawatt and Thelem (by way of the UK) and home team residents Joe Nice, Truenature and Hahn Solo. MVC – Max Von Cannon (by way of Hong Kong/Boston) has been added to the line-up as well. With a good majority of the guests playing out for the first time on American soil, Saturday will be a Small World indeed.

You can peep event details via Facebook and pick up tickets in advance via Resident Advisor. If you are attending, please e-mail your name to RSVP@reconstrvct.com to be kept up-to-date on the location announcement and other pertinent details. Also, peep some prose here.

For this edition of Music Monday, go swimming in a sea of embeds and thank me later.

It’s been just over two weeks now since The Weekend That Never Was.

The sixth-annual gathering of some of the biggest names in transnational electronic bass-driven music and like-minded enthusiasts, known as Bloc Weekend, was scheduled to take place on July 6th and 7th of this year and was the main magnetic force not to be ignored pulling me overseas from New York.

A couple friends of mine have made the trek in the past; with one saying “What happens at Bloc, stays at Bloc” and another letting us in deeper with his extensive and insanely well-written recap over on Bassfaced.

Needless to say, this festival year after year packs a solid line-up that gets ears perked around the world and regardless of what my parents may have thought, I wasn’t the only ‘crazy’ one who traveled out of my native country to be in attendance.

This year’s festival was to feature Snoop Dogg, Oribital, Flying Lotus, Amon Tobin, Squarepusher, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, DOOM, Nicholas Jaar, Digital Mystikz, Shackleton, to name a few, as well as curated showcases from Swamp81, Resident Advisor, Bleep, Hyperdub, Boiler Room and more. I still have my rough plan for Friday night stored in a nostalgic note on my phone.

KC’s Music Monday: Weekend Recap Edition

This past weekend an ambitious quest presented itself to me in what became a self-curated, Red Bull-fueled tour of three cities to attend three respective events in three days. Thursday brought me to Burlington for friends and Blockhead, Friday brought me back to Williamsburg for TURRBOTAX®, friends and educators Terrence Parker, Doc Daneeka and Octo Octa, and Saturday took me to New Paltz for JunGALA, friends and Dubbel Dutch and Samo Sound Boy. Needless to say, I spent majority of Sunday catching up on sleep and avoiding checking my bank account balance.

Before I get started in recapping my weekend, be sure to check out the latest mix from Party With Tina and dive into your work week properly.

Party With Tina February Mix by party with tina

For this week’s Music Monday, I present you with a random assortment of musical sources of inspiration as to why I brought myself on a bass-driven pilgrimage up North and up and down I-87.

Sorry not sorry for the longest post ever. Happy Monday, hit the jump.
