Earlier today I stopped by the new location of the Honest Weight Food Co-op. It’s huge, and you’ll be taken back as well the first time you go. There’s some really great touches that they’ve incorporated into the new store, such as farmer profiles above the produce, recycled barn tables in the cafe from Silver Fox, custom made produce stands and custom made demo tables. Really gorgeous stuff that only makes sense coming from the people at HWFC. The new bulk section is the biggest in the country (that they know of), as well as kombucha section and many others. The list goes on and on with the new stuff and I can’t possibly list it all.

I can’t express how happy I am for this new store to finally open. This has been the plan for years and it’s incredible to see this finally happen. Even though they were still setting things up, there’s already so many new items that I wanted to purchase as I was walking through the store. Fantastic job to everyone involved.

Artist Spotlight: An interview with Nate Osborne

Earlier this week, I was browsing through a random fashion blog when I came across a photo of someone wearing a novelty t-shirt that read, “No Time For Art,” across the front. I hated it. If anything, it was a reminder that it is absolutely imperative that we make time for art, regardless of in what form, creating or observing. I understand that people get busy (or feel ‘too busy’) but the idea of ‘not having time’ to appreciate the infinite array of visual elements in our culture in general just made me think that we must reevaluate how we are spending our time and what we are placing value on. Plus, I really hated that t-shirt for making me think so much about it. Anger, on multiple levels, really.

My friend Sev Statik pointed out something a couple months ago that has continued to stick with me and also accidentally makes me feel better about that bullshit novelty t-shirt slogan. He said, “I want to meet you in the act of your craft – I want to meet you while you are writing, performing, on stage, at your art show, in your studio, at a record shop, on the field, wherever. That’s where I want to meet you.” It makes me feel instantly grateful, because when I break it down for myself, I really have met so many people I call my friends through catching them in the act of doing whatever it is that they do.

Nate Osborne is no exception to this. I first met Nate at an art show years ago where he was showing his work in conjunction with First Friday in Albany. His work instantly drew me in, mainly because of how clear it was that his work was his passion preserved on paper. I truly believe that when people put serious time and dedication into their work, other people will take notice. Nate’s artwork, in my opinion, has only gotten better with time and with each new piece, all while showing no signs of slowing down.

Currently working full time at Full Effect in Troy as a tattoo artist, Nate is constantly churning out new, quality pieces of artwork and someone seriously needs to get him a solo art show of his own stat. You can next see Nate’s work displayed and available for sale this Sunday, June 16th at the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road for this year’s 6th Annual Albany Comic Con.

Today I stopped by Proctors to check out the preview for their show Cirkopolis by Cirque Éloize which will run August 7 through 24. Proctors has secured a five year deal with Cirque Éloize, a contemporary circus troupe based out of Montreal, to make Schenectady their summer home. During the short preview, the performers went nuts with incredibly technical synchronized routines and tricks, all in the circus vein. If you’ve ever seen any other Cirque show, you generally know what to expect. I’m incredibly thankful to have this show so close to home and I can’t wait to attend.

From the copy:

“Cirkopolis was imagined as a crossroads—between imagination and reality, between individuality and community, between limits and possibilities. The show is driven by the poetic impulse of life, the physical prowess of the circus and the humour, at once serious and light-hearted. Entering Cirkopolis is all about letting go and allowing yourself to be borne aloft by hope,” explained Jeannot Painchaud, creative director of Cirque Éloize and co-director of Cirkopolis.

Read more about the deal on The Business Review and check out Cirkopolis event on the Proctors website.

Last night’s performance at the Washington Avenue Armory hit like today’s heatwave. At times it was the good kind of hot where you didn’t notice how sweaty you had gotten and at times it was hazy and uncertain.

Any show that has more than one or two openers is setting itself up for a challenge of captivating the audience, with some simply succeeding easier than others. Shows at the Armory in the newly-arrived summer can be a lot to take in with 2,500+ people, beverages that magically remain cold for about five seconds upon being served and the carefully calculated decision to dive into the crowd or watch a bit removed in the bleachers.

This past Thursday, the Hollow Bar + Kitchen, nee Bayou Cafe, partnered with WEQX and held a really awesome show. Portugal. the Man was supporting their new album, ‘Evil Friends,’ which was produced by Danger Mouse and is out June 1st. You can stream one of their new songs if you haven’t heard any of their new album yet.

The show itself was great, and I love shows that start on time, and have no opener. The dudes from P.tM just walked on stage and rocked out for a bit, took some questions from hosts at WEQX and were on their way. I am admittedly not up to date with Portugal’s new material but it’s easy to enjoy them live without knowing every song. This was my first time in the Hollow Bar + Kitchen since it stopped being the Bayou and the direction they’ve taken it is great. There were noticeable moves away from the kitschy aesthetic of the Bayou which was much needed. I really hope to see more awesome live music here as this show was a real sleeper of a booking for a Thursday night. Keep it up!
