Earlier this week, I checked out the latest installations at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. I haven’t been in just over a year and a half, so pretty much everything was new to me, save for Sol LeWitt‘s ongoing exhibit. You easily can spend all day there without feeling overwhelmed from “too much” art. It’s one of my favorite day trips to take and I highly recommend you make the trek if you haven’t been, or haven’t been in awhile. Additionally, on Thursdays this summer, the beer garden is open until 11pm – where drinks are served from the Chalet, an interactive work of art created by Dean Baldwin.

Be sure to check out MASS MoCA’s upcoming event schedule and hit the jump or click the photo above for some photos from my recent visit.

When I was invited to join my friends in Giant Gorilla Dog Thing and Iron Mic (Iron Bar Collective and Mic Lanny) on tour earlier this year, I didn’t quite believe I’d be able to make it happen. Now that 14 days of touring are behind us, I am grateful that things aligned and I was able to join along for the ride, even if I was admittedly asleep for most of the driving parts. We trekked over 2500 miles in 14 days, as far as Watertown, Wisconsin, and worked our way back home, concluding the adventure with a homecoming show at Bogie’s.

During the past two weeks, I posted over at my designated tour blog, Iron Giants Plus One, where you can catch up with brief show recaps and photos.

A sweaty tour van full of thank you’s to Dez, Mitch, Graffiti, DePhyant, Tao and Lanny for the opportunity and for putting up with me. Keep an eye out for our tour video and click the photo above or hit the jump for the gallery of some of my favorite photos from the Iron Giants tour.

Last week, The Olde English Pub unveiled their new back patio that they had been working on. Judy Stacey, who was responsible for Albany’s Tulip Festival for more than a decade, was behind the landscaping for the back of the pub and it is absolutely gorgeous. The patio is open Wednesdays through Saturdays and is enormous compared to how little the Quackenbush House is.

Grab a pint and enjoy the warm nights we’ve got ahead. Click the photo above or hit the jump for the gallery.

The news broke last week that the Trojan Hotel in Troy was sold, and there’s big plans in store for the 5-story, almost 20,000sqft building. In a nutshell, the O’Brien family purchased the building and plan on moving their restaurant (O’Brien’s Public House) in, as well as calling the former Trojan Hotel their home. There’s quite a lot of work to be done, but they’re planning on tackling the project one floor at a time, starting with the restaurant. The basement will reopen as a bar. If you’re interested in all the details, read the full story from the Troy Record.

I stopped by during the Farmer’s Market on Saturday and got a tour of the building and gave it a once-over with my camera. It’s going to be a lot of work, but well worth it once completed. I’m glad to see another building getting an adaptive reuse rather than knocked down or left vacant. Click the photo above or hit the jump to see the gallery.

This past weekend I had a work obligation in Kennebunkport. I decided to stay over and spend the next day checking out Portland, which is a quick 30 minutes north. The first night, my friends and I quickly and unfortunately ran into their 1am last call time, which was partially forgiven by the fact we sat down and had an incredible dinner at midnight. The next day was heavy on the exploring and we walked a lot of miles over the six or so hours we spent checking everything out.

There’s so many wide-ranging independent shops which are all heavily trafficked and were awesome to see. Portland Dry Goods was an incredible menswear boutique which had a lot in their small store and even included their own shirting. Local 188 had incredible cocktails with fresh pressed fruit juices and house-infused spirits. I got an espresso from The Speckled Ax which was made with an $18,000+ espresso machine. The list goes on and on.

If you can stomach the 4 hour drive, this is an incredible place to spend a weekend. I’ll be heading back there as soon as I can.
