Ticket Giveaway: Francis and the Lights: The White Room

Thanks to EMPAC, we’ve got another lovely giveaway for ya.

From the EMPAC website:

Reclusive singer, songwriter, and pianist Francis Farewell Starlite will be in residence to create a new pop music spectacle—The White Room. White Room references the small, white, environmentally controlled chamber used by NASA astronauts to make final preparations before entering the spacecraft, such as donning parachute packs, putting on helmets, and detaching portable air conditioning units. First used in Project Gemini, its use continued through subsequent programs up to and including the Space Shuttle program.

He’s toured with/produced Drake, opened for MGMT, Ke$ha, La Roux, and Mark Ronson. Dang.

To win tickets for the Saturday show, just leave a comment and I’ll pick a winner at random at 4pm on Saturday. Don’t enter if you can’t attend and use a valid email for the comment, I’ll email you if you won!

Keep Albany Boring’s Guide To Halloween

Most importantly, remember Halloween weekend is just like any other weekend out of the year. It has the potential to absolutely suck, the potential to get you arrested for unassumingly wandering into a 300+ person bro party (good job with that party, btw) and the potential to be better than last weekend. Two years ago on Halloween, I ended up choosing to be the designated driver for my friends and safely drove home a person I met for the first time, who now has bought me several “thank you” drinks scattered throughout the years every time he sees me out at a bar. Last weekend, I did the same thing, just not awkwardly dressed as Coraline.

Halloween weekend very closely follows the Keep Albany Boring Guide To Partying, except with a costume-related focal point. You might be one of those people claiming Halloween is your absolute favorite holiday of all time as the weekend approaches. And if not, lighten up. If you hate Halloween, you’re setting yourself up for accidentally dressing as a wallflower when you could be taking full advantage of the opportunity to be the Gaga you always wanted to be dancing on stage tonight at Fuze Box for OUTPOST1 Halloween Edition.

Bus Jamming: A commentary on CDTA’s modernization

Perhaps you’ve noticed some changes to Albany’s bus stops in the past few weeks – blue slipcovers over signs informing riders that the stop is slated to be discontinued, or green covers announcing a new one. Effective Sunday, November 13, the Capital District Transportation authority is enacting a massive restructuring to its service in Albany County. Nearly every line is affected by schedule or route changes. Many lower-ridership routes will be consolidated into new ones that the CDTA hopes will be more comprehensive and efficient.

It’s about time. Albany’s bus system is an anachronism, a relic of its days as the United Traction streetcar system. Many routes follow nearly the same path as in the United Traction days. But the last streetcars ran 65 years ago. Albany’s changed. Population and business shifts have led to many city routes becoming virtual lines to nowhere. Meanwhile the most heavily-traveled routes service Crossgates Mall, the University at Albany, and Colonie Centre – places that were literally sand dunes when the trolley wires came down and the city paved over the rails.

Stream Phantogram’s Nightlife EP

Even though Phantogram hates being from Upstate NY and never plays here except at shows at RPI where you have to be a student to attend (sorry not worth $55,000 to see you guys play some mp3s irl); I still like their product. For cred, I even liked them when they were called Charlie Everywhere and played at relevant local venues such as Valentines.

Wired of all places (jesus christ do you guys have a private jet yet?) has their EP to stream, which I’ve embedded below so for your listening enjoyment.

“Nightlife” by Phantogram by The Underwire

Sarah, can I bring you on a date? I love your haircut. Are you too VIP for a “local photographer/blogger” like me now that you hang with relevant mainstream photographers from Brooklyn such as Noah Kalina? Can I take pix of you two recording in your cabin in the woods (Will Justin Vernon be there too?) maybe?

I’ll just keep pretending you’re singing these songs to me. Only.

Recap: Every Time I Die + Gwar at Northern Lights

Gwar crawled out of their cave in hell Saturday night, dragging Every Time I Die and Ghoul alongside them, to play to a sweat-soaked-turned-fake-blood-soaked crowd at Northern Lights, as part of the “Return of the World Maggot” tour. The national tour kicked off on Tuesday of this past week and will also make an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this Thursday, the 27th. Seeing Every Time I Die on the bill was a huge draw for many (including myself) and they very well could have headlined the night and have had just as much of a successfully packed turn out, if not more.

ETID is a staple in the music that shaped my youth and last night easily made my own personal ‘best shows in 2k11′ list. Judging off their tweet from last night, they felt the same way.
