What democracy looks like

A lot of my posts have been chaotic lately — bros drunkenly rioting in the streets of the student ghetto or chaining themselves to the UAlbany fountain. But this one tops everything. Below is a video of last night’s chaos at the capitol:

A massive amount of people (I heard an estimate of 1,500) took to the capitol to protest the senate and assembly final budget votes. They were people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds that traveled from all over the state for one goal — to take part in the democratic process of state politics. However they were met with locked doors, closed off meetings, and walls of state troopers.

The protest got heated at times and one person was arrested for dangerous gonging. Pizza almost wasn’t delivered and students banded together and at times tried to plan occupation and barricades. All in all the night went well and it was great to see young people involved and passionate, many of whom slept there overnight and continued the fight today. One senator told the senate they should be ashamed of themselves and then joined the protestors with a pillow and blanket. There were activities throughout the night, including a lawyer having a “know your protesting rights” Q&A outside the senate chambers, and some protesters took the time to explore the historic building.

At least one local citizen disagreed with the protesting on their blog, which quotes Ghandi in the header. Confused.

In the end the budget was passed and there are massive cuts in educational and healthcare, but the message was delivered and the pressure is on for future votes.

Called it

Also, he claims that he was expelled from school, directly by the president of UAlbany himself. Oops.

Also, SUNY doesn’t get that he’s just an epic troll. Here’s a letter sent to all of UAlbany from the UAlbany Vetereans club.

Dear UAlbany students, faculty and staff,

It has come to our attention that a UAlbany student veteran, Chris Schewe, is engaging in unorthodox and deviant behavior in order to protest the cancellation of Fountain Day. Some of his actions include chaining himself to the fountain, going on a hunger strike, yelling obscenities and insults to bystanders at the fountain, and skipping classes to pace the fountain every day. In his letters, flyers, and YouTube videos, Mr. Schewe specifically draws attention to the fact that he is a veteran, and attempts to gain support, both by eliciting pity for his status as a veteran, and also by attempting to inspire confidence in his cause (“Fountain Day the sober way”) because of his experience as a soldier. Mr. Schewe has also claimed on his Facebook page that “all the veterans on campus are behind [him]” in this endeavor.

Protest today at the NYS Capitol

Today, there are 15 buses from across New York unloading people who are set to protest the proposed budget from Governor Cuomo. This is a last ditch effort to have Cuomo reconsider the $100M cuts to the State Universities across New York, while simultaneously letting the higher income tax surcharge expire for the states highest earners.

The rally is set for 1pm and is expected to be over a thousand strong. There will be updates throughout the day here with pertinent information.

First edit: Today marks the monumental day when the State Capitol of New York placed their largest order for delivery pizza. [lohud] [thanks for the tip off Donges]

The Living Walls Conference: Coming to Albany

Holy shit. I can’t believe this at ALL. The Living Walls Conference, or “street artist summer camp” (as it’s informally called) is actually happening here in Albany. I’m going to put up this video for now to give you an idea of the amazing amount of things that are going to happen around us. I will be covering this heavily as things progress and happen. Wow.
